New Year’s Eve in New York

For the past few years, a large majority of my free time and social interactions have taken place in either a bar, club, or lounge. I, like many people my age, find the nightlife scene to be the premiere avenue for having fun and establishing relationships. For the most part, my weekends are spent socializing and drinking at one of the many fine bars or nightclubs that New York City has to offer.

From going out to the bars and clubs as frequently as I did it quickly became clear that there were some nights that were more successful then others. For instance, there are some nights where there is certain electricity in the air and it feels like you can do no wrong. These are the nights when the beer goes down like water and the liquor tastes as smooth as the music that the DJ is playing. These are the nights when every word you utter towards a member of the opposite sex comes out sounding as sweet as the chocolate brownies your grandmother used to bake for you. The type of night where even though you spent your entire paycheck on buying rounds for your friends and new acquaintances, you do not feel upset or worried at all, because the stories and relationships that were created out of this moment are more valuable that any monetary amount.

In a perfect world, all of my weekends would be just like this. Unfortunately, the world is not perfect, and there are many occasions where my weekend ends up nastier than a urinal after a game at Yankee Stadium. These are the type of nights where nothing can go write and everything seems to go wrong. These are the nights when every time you put your alcoholic beverage to your lips you have an internal debate with yourself about which of your friends you are going to ask for a piece of gum after you throw up. The type of nights where every girl you seem to converse with either has a boyfriend or conveniently has to go to the bathroom at that exact time. These are the nights where if I owned a gun I would probably shoot myself in the foot in order to erase the terrible memory of the prior proceedings.

In order to assure that my weekends in the upcoming future resemble the, “do no wrong,” type of nights that I mentioned above, I started to observe the critical factors that determine a successful evening from an unsuccessful one. In doing this I have created a list of guidelines that if followed properly should guarantee a successful night. The main components that will make or break most nights are the people, the venue or setting, the music, and last but certainly not least the bathroom availability. To further describe the rules and regulations that distinguish a memorable evening from a disastrous one, I will refer to my most recent New Years Eve celebration, for the fact that this specific occasion is an ideal blueprint on how a night should progress. Let’s just say that on this night I could do no wrong.

One of the most important, if not thee most important element in determining a night’s success revolves around the individuals who are present at the bar or club you are at. Without the right quality of people the possibility of a good night is not very promising. It is essential that there is a favorable ratio of girls to guys. If there are more guys in a bar or club than there are girls, there will be competition among all men for female’s attention. This in turn will lead to drunken, testosterone fueled fights, and the possibility of counting down the New Years with your sexually frustrated and overly intoxicated male friend, Bob. By assuring that there are more girls in the bar or clubs than there are men, not only do you eliminate competition, you also present men with options and all men like options For instance, this past new years celebration seven of my guy friends along with twelve of my close girlfriends all attended a club together. By having a large amount of females escort us to the celebration, my male friends and I were all able to comfortably socialize and mingle, and we did not have to throw a punch in order for it to happen.

Another critical factor that goes into measuring a night’s success involves the venue or setting in which the evening is taking place. If the club or bar you have chosen to attend does not encompass some of the model specifications that particular venues have, then your chance of a great night may not possible. It is vital that the venue you choose is spacious, but not too big so that you have to use map quest just find out where the bar was again. You do not want to be at a bar or club where the issue of personal space and leg room is a recurrent problem. Additionally the venues bar layout is vital to cementing a good night. One of the most dreadful feelings in the world is not being able to place your drink order because there are fifty other people in front of you screaming for a jack and coke. By going to a venue where there are numerous bars with little waiting period, you avoid the probability of an impatient and frustrated outburst, and allow more time to hang out and party. For example, this past New Years Eve my friends and I attended the nightclub BED. BED’s open surroundings, along with its vast selection of conveniently placed bars, allowed for a comfortable and enjoyable setting.

In addition to the people and the venue, another factor that is a very important in determining a night’s success involves the music that is being played. If the club or bar you have chosen to attend does not play suitable music, then the potential for a fun and successful night are greatly reduced. A lot of the time, the type of music that is played directly influences the crowd’s demeanor. It is essential that the source of music in the bar or club ranges from contemporary hits to older, classic joints. Remember that if the music is not right, the females will not want to dance, which in essence will deteriorate the mood and feeling of the club. Lucky for me, during my New Years celebration at BED, the DJ played the perfect combination of fast and slow songs, and created an environment where everyone was partying like it was 1999. Had the DJ played elevator like music, the vibe would not be the same, and the night could have been a total disaster.

The final critical element that goes into measuring a night’s success involves the availability of the bathroom. I know you are thinking to yourself how something such as bathroom’s availability can determine whether a night is good or a bad. However, this is a critical element and will affect the outcome of your night.

In order to assure that my weekends in the upcoming future resemble the, “do no wrong,” type of nights, I will continue to try and follow the rules and regulations that guarantee a special night from a not so special night.
